For the past five days I have been neck-deep in IT shenanigans far beyond my pay grade.   Next week the Raw Deal will take on a new, sleeker and more reader-friendly look.  During the changeover I immersed myself in other blogs for inspiration.  Often, I enjoy taking a break from the norm and find myself reading things of a completely different nature.  This evening I stumbled upon a most unique and entertaining post by Sam Sommers, Ph.D. and Social Psychologist at Tufts university.  Here’s what I found: Read the rest of this entry »

Matt Damon; Love Your Movies, But You're An Idiot

In America, funny, Obama, Sarah Palin on March 10, 2010 at 11:06 am

(By Joanne Galloway)

I’ve had that proverbial “pea under the mattress” with Matt Damon over his characterization of Sarah Palin for some time now.  It may be old news, but I think it’s important when you consider the current influence – and possible 2012 presidential run – of Sarah Palin.

Matt Damon – the *Rosetta Stone* for political knowledge – used his Hollywood influence to gain an interview with CBS news during the 2008 presidential campaigns.   He was quote, horrified, *egads* at the idea of McCain winning office with Sarah Palin left to potentially lead this country after his *imminent* demise.

Focusing solely on Mr. Damon’s fear, let’s analyze a few of his statements from the video snippet.  He refers to Sarah Palin as a:

“Bad Disney Movie”, “Totally absurd”, “really terrifying possibility…[of] this being a reality”, “I don’t know anything about her”, “Governor of Alaska for less than 2 years”

Ouch.  He must have really been scared.  Ok, never fear Matt – I looked into the matter for you – and to keep things simple – we’ll focus on just their public office experience, m’kay?  Good.

  • Palin was a member of the Wasilla, Alaska City Council from 1992 to 1996, and the city’s mayor from 1996 to 2002
  • Palin chaired the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission from 2003 until she resigned in 2004
  • From 2006 -2009, Palin was Governor of Alaska

Ok now we need someone to compare her to.  Ah heck – let’s go for the Head Honcho, the Big Cheese – let’s use Matt’s Hero and Chief, Mr. Obama.

  • Obama served three terms in the Illinois Senate from 1997 to 2004
  • He won election to the U.S. Senate in November 2004.
  • Won the presidency and was sworn in January 2009.

So… let’s do the simple math.

Sarah Palin’s years in elected office – 14-15 years, give or take a few months

Obama’s years in elected office – 13 give or take a few months (as of March 2010).

Hmmm.  I am no math major, but I think Mr. Damon might have been a tad off in his figuring.

If Mr. Obama was okay with Mr. Damon, then what was it again about Sarah Palin he “feared” so much? That she was a “soccer mom”?  I can see how that might put her out of the mainstream.  Ya know,… because there aren’t too many soccer moms out there.  He doesn’t “know anything about her”.  I suppose when you’re reading scripts there isn’t much time to read about anything else, guess we’ll have to forgive him there.  Or we could go into the shamefully wretched coverage the mainstream media gave to Palin.. oh, that’s another long, sad story – so , moving on…..  A “Bad Disney Movie”….well now, to be fair WALL-E did look like he was wearing glasses, but I’m not sure I get his point there.  “Really terrifying possibility” and  “Totally absurd”…

Oh whoops… he must have meant good ole’ Joe on that one.  *raucous laughter*

So, in simple conclusion, I’d have to agree *snort* – Oh yes – THANK GOODNESS we’re safe from Sarah Palin.  The good news is we have our *rock star* backup VP for dealing with the big stuff, ya know, like Vladimir Putin.

Sleep well Matt.  Nothing to fear here.
